About Boca Sami
Boca Sami, located just 15 minutes from Curaçao’s airport, is an excellent place to find an oasis of tranquillity. Often referred to as Little Saint Michel, September 29th is a notable day on the calendar when Saint Michael and the Archangel are honoured. Throughout the rest of the year, tourists can experience the remarkable life and culture of the village in Boca Sami. As a part of Curaçao, which boasts diverse heritage and 55 different cultures, Boca Sami embodies a “live and let live” attitude, making it the most exceptional island in the region.
Being an outstanding spot for divers, the rocky coast of Vaersen Bay was once a popular beach for swimming and for fishing boats and oil platforms. Overall, visitors can hike the nearly 105-meter-high Saint Michielsberg and explore numerous plantations located in the Calabash forest. On the southern side, you will find Cape Mal Meeuw and Snake Bay, named after the eel-like snakes found in the area, especially in September and October due to the annual coral spawning event. For tourists, there are plenty of facilities as the area is popular for spotting pelicans and flamingos.
When you think of Curaçao, images of sun-drenched beaches and crystal-clear water probably come to mind. One of those hidden gems is Boka St. Michiel, a secluded beach on the southwest coast of the island. This article takes you on a journey to this beautiful spot, perfect for a day out with friends or family.
Boka St. Michiel, also known as Boca Sami, is a small fishing village with a calm and authentic character. The beach is made up of fine sand, bordered by the clear blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Here you can enjoy sunbathing, picnicking, or simply relaxing while taking in the peaceful surroundings and scenic views. Be aware that there is little shade, so be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, or an umbrella.
Water Sports: Adventure in the Water
For the active traveler, Boka St. Michiel is the perfect location for snorkeling or diving. The underwater world is breathtaking, with plenty of colorful fish, coral reefs, and other sea creatures to admire. Additionally, there is a dive school in the village where both beginners and experienced divers can take lessons and join dive trips.
Fishing Boats and Local Culture: A Unique Experience
The charm of Boka St. Michiel lies not only in its beautiful beach and water sports opportunities but also in its local culture. The fishing village offers a glimpse into the daily life of the local population. In the early morning, you can see the fishing boats set out to sea, and at the end of the day, they return with their catch. You might even get the chance to chat with the friendly fishermen or buy fresh fish for your evening meal.
Playa Wachi
A wonderfully beautiful little beach where you often have the chance to have it all to yourself. The water here is beautifully blue and clear, and it’s fairly easy to enter the sea. You can find this tiny beach in Boca Sami, a fishing village just past Blue Bay.
On the beach, there’s nothing else to be found except for two small palapas. There are no stalls where you can buy food and drinks. This is likely one of the reasons why it is so quiet here. However, above the beach, there are two picnic tables with an umbrella where you can sit and enjoy the view. There is also a small parking area nearby.
While the beach itself is quiet, it is a popular dive spot, so you will often see divers entering the sea. Snorkeling here is also fun.
The name Snake Bay – or Slangenbaai – originated because snakes are regularly spotted in the water here. Well, actually, they are not snakes but eels. Additionally, this beach in Boca Sami is also known as Playa Wachi.
It is really a lovely little beach to take a nice dip in the water and then lie in the sun for a while. Bring a beach chair and a cooler with snacks and drinks, and spend a peaceful day here.
